We’ve all been there before – whether it is losing weight, abstaining from compulsive habits, managing reactivity, stopping anxiety, or anything in between – our hopes alone have failed to bring us the change we so deeply desire. Even when coupled with effort, the success rate for lasting change is low, else you would not have found your way to this page! Some people who envision their goals can attain them through effort, discipline and consistency, but the initial momentum is not always sustainable and setbacks are a breeding ground for disappointment and futility. In short, we find ourselves stuck, unable to bridge the gap between where we are and where we want to be.
Seeking change always comes with a knowing that the status quo is not serving us anymore. While awareness is a crucial step of the journey, it is only the tip of the iceberg and rarely enough to take us where we want to be.
The belief that change necessitates effort, discipline and consistency is not wrong, but ‘the why’ has to be compelling enough to drive all that; sheer will may be sufficient for a small percentage of people, but the rest of us need motivation generated intrinsically instead of forced upon externally.
I have found that when the desired change feels very farfetched, then sheer effort is not enough to result in change, no matter how deep the longing is. The felt sense of change feeling unattainable is evidence that you are brushing against the edge, or unseen limits, of your current mindset.
