Founded in 2017 by mother-of-two, Ines Samaali, Khomssa Handcraft is a sustainable and eco-friendly fashion brand that embodies Tunisian heritage and craftsmanship one espadrille, hat and bag at a time. Their brick and mortar at the Gate Avenue at the Dubai International Financial Centre (DIFC) is a joy to walk into, a feast for the senses really with its airy kaftans, colorful beach towels, and Ines’s good vibes. The name Khomssa is the Tunisian version of the palm-shaped amulet considered to protect against the evil eye in the region.
Khomssa espadrilles
Khomssa espadrilles are classical, trendy and very comfortable. They owe their contemporary designs to Ines but they are handmade in Tunisia.
The top, insole and sole of the espadrilles are all hand-stitched and any designs are hand-embroidered. In most cases, the top part is made from 100% cotton or recycled leather.
Their insoles are made from a very durable, sustainable and eco-friendly fiber from the esparto plant that is woven into cords. Esparto or halfa grass is a desert plant that grows in North African regions – it does not require much water to grow and it is not extracted from the roots when harvested.
Unlike other brands, Khomssa espadrilles soles are not made from rubber, plastic or silicone, but from a patented mix of recycled leather and fiber.
The espadrilles are designed to be worn without socks. The cord insoles absorb water, moisture and sweat, leaving the feet dry and odorless. Also, the fibers in the soles massage the feet and aid in blood circulation.
I love that Khomssa espadrilles are customizable when it comes to fabric, colors, design, fit and heel height. This allows for a plethora of options and gives birth to special designs that make unique gifts to yourself or others, especially that the brand ships worldwide!
Khomssa beach bags, hats and towels
The brand’s bags and hats are also eco-friendly and sustainably made from fibers extracted from date palm. Any leather used is recycled, and most of the times, colors present are due to natural dyes.
Khomssa beach towels are hand-woven and made from 100% cotton. They are larger than typical towels, their sizes ranging from 2×1 m and up. They are light and easy to pack. They readily absorb sweat and water and dry quickly, which makes them great companions to the beach, gym, yoga class and wherever else you fancy taking your own towel to, like hotels and spas. The towels are machine-washable and do not shrink, so taking care of them is a breeze.
